10/7/2023 0 Comments Ka awa loa plantationStaying minutes away certainly makes it easier! We booked a 7AM kayak rental from Bayside Adventures online and rolled down the hill to find our kayaks waiting by the water for us with friendly help launching them and good advice on what to see. I'd recommend getting to both Kealakekua Bay and Honounou as early as you can. There are plenty of good restaurants in the area- we had great pizza from Black Rock, enjoyed on the wide beautiful porch at Ka'awa Loa and good tacos from Shaka Tacoz. As other reviews mentioned, the driveway is daunting and a jeep would've made it much less so. The outdoor lava rock showers deserve their own mention- there is nothing like taking a sunrise shower as the birds start to sing, magical. The cottage only has screens but earplugs are thoughtfully provided and worked perfectly well for me. I love being as close to nature as possible but he would've prefered windows to dim the very loud coqui frogs. The cottage has a full kitchen and a lovely back porch but might not be the best choice for those who prefer a less rustic experience. Michael, Greg and Hannah are all so friendly and helpful in planning what to see and do in the area, truly the best hosts! My husband and I stayed in the stand-alone cottage and we'll probably try one of the rooms next time. I don't think I've ever been as relaxed as I was reading on the daybed on the porch or soaking in the hot tub at sunset. Greg, Michael and Hannah have truly thought of every detail from the delicious breakfast to the many relaxing nooks throughout the property where you can enjoy the stunning view, the smell of flowers and the sound of tropical birds and (lol) coqui frogs at night. As I write this, I'm dreaming of coming back to stay longer at Ka'awa Loa Plantation! What a beautiful and uniquely peaceful slice of paradise this is.
